Relation of ultrastructure to function in the intact heart: sarcomere structure relative to pressure volume curves of intact left ventricles of dog and cat.

چکیده
• The sarcomere is the basic ultrastructural unit of contraction in striated muscle. Huxley and Hanson have shown that the alternating band patterns of the sarcomere in skeletal muscle derive from the longitudinal disposition of two sets of interdigitating contractile protein filaments. On the basis of these and other studies, the sliding filament hypothesis for muscle contraction was proposed. The ultrastructure of heart muscle has also been examined and its sarcomeres shown to be similar in structure to those of skeletal muscle. More recently sarcomere structure has been studied in relation to the length-tension curve of both skeletal" and cardiac° muscle, and despite previous objections," it has been demonstrated that the sliding filament hypothesisexplains the band pattern changes at varying muscle lengths as well as the relation between active tension and muscle length for both types of striated muscle. The relevance, however, of sarcomere length-tension relations for linear samples of myocardium (papillary muscle) to physiological performance of the intact left ventricle has not

متن کاملRelation of ultrastructure and function. Sarcomere dimensions, pressure-volume curves, and geometry of the intact left ventricle of the immature canine heart.
In 18 immature mongrel dogs (3-4 weeks of age), anesthetized with chloralose and morphine, the hearts were arrested with potassium chloride and excised. After reproducible curves relating pressure and volume in the left ventricle (LV) had been obtained, each LV was fixed by coronary perfusion with glutaraldehyde while pressure was maintained at a predetermined value between 0 and 30 mm Hg. Midw...
متن کاملEffect of Carvacrol on Catalase Activity and mRNA Expression Following Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Rats
Background and Aims: Cardiac hypertrophy is a compensatory augmentation response of the heart due to pressure overload that can lead to heart failure. Carvacrol is considered as the major compound of many plants, that possesses strong antioxidant properties. The present study aimed to evaluate effect of carvacrol on catalase activity and mRNA expression following left ventricular hypertrop...
متن کاملDiastolic geometry and sarcomere lengths in the chronically dilated canine left ventricle.
In 10 dogs left ventricular geometry and ultrastructure were examined 3 to 12 weeks after chronic ventricular dilatation was induced by means of a large arteriovenous shunt. Following cardiac catheterization, the hearts were arrested and fixed in diastole at the left ventricular end-diastolic pressures (LVEDP) which existed in the beating heart. Transmural LVEDP were increased in all animals (a...
متن کاملRegistration of Left Ventricular Volume Curves in the Dog with the Systemic Circulation Intact
A method is described whereby it is possible to obtain volume curves from the left ventricle of an open-chested dog with an essentially intact systemic circulation. Seveiul applications of such univentricular records to the study of the heart's performance are suggested and examples of analyses from recorded curves are presented. Changes in the physicochemical properties of the myocardium are s...
